What is JoSAA?

Understanding JoSAA 2026

JoSAA — the Joint Seat Allocation Authority — is the single body that conducts online seat allocation for admissions to NITs, IIITs, GFTIs, and IITs across India. It runs on a merit-cum-preference matching system based on your JEE rank and the preference list you submit.

For NIT, IIIT, and GFTI admissions, your JEE Main rank determines eligibility. For IIT admissions, your JEE Advanced rank is used. Both processes run simultaneously under JoSAA but are treated as separate rank pools.

Unified Portal

One registration covers all participating institutes. Submit a single preference list and JoSAA matches you across all eligible options.

Merit-Based Allocation

Seats are allocated strictly by rank within each category and quota. No interviews, no management quota, no discretion.

Transparent Process

Seat matrices, reservation breakdowns, and round-wise closing ranks are all published officially after every round.

NIT / IIIT / GFTI

  • JEE Main 2026 qualified
  • Class 12: 75% aggregate (top 20 percentile)
  • SC/ST: 65% aggregate in Class 12
  • Must register on JoSAA portal

IIT Seats

  • JEE Advanced 2026 qualified

  • JEE Main rank alone is NOT sufficient
Reservation Policy

JoSAA Reservation Policy

JoSAA follows the Government of India reservation norms for seat allocation. Seats are reserved by category at the institute and programme level.

27%

OBC-NCL

Central format only. Income < ₹8L/yr.

10%

GEN-EWS

Current financial year certificate only.

15%

SC

Central schedule caste listing required.

7.5%

ST

Central schedule tribe listing required.

5%

PwD

Horizontal — within each category pool.

20%

Female Supernumerary

Extra seats above intake. Not from existing quota.

What Horizontal Reservation Means

PwD candidates are allocated seats within their respective categories — an OBC-NCL PwD candidate competes within OBC-NCL seats, not a separate pool.

Female Supernumerary Seats

Additional seats created above sanctioned intake. Female candidates compete in both Gender-Neutral and Female-only pools simultaneously. Female-only closing ranks are typically much more relaxed.

OBC-NCL Certificate Requirement

Must be in central government format. A state OBC certificate is not accepted for JoSAA. Family income must be below ₹8 lakh per year. An invalid certificate means losing your allotted seat.

EWS Certificate Requirement

Must be issued in the current financial year. A certificate from a previous financial year is invalid for JoSAA — even if it was valid when issued.

Step by Step

The JoSAA Counseling Process

Understanding each step before it begins is the difference between a planned strategy and reactive decisions.

01

Registration

Log in to the JoSAA portal using your JEE Main or JEE Advanced credentials. Verify your personal details, category, and state of eligibility. Registration must be completed before the choice filling window opens.

02

Choice Filling

Add and order your preferred combinations of institute and academic programme. There is no limit to how many choices you can fill. The order you place them determines your allotment — JoSAA stops at the first match going top to bottom.

Lock your choices before the deadline. Manual locking is safer than relying on the auto-lock.

03

Mock Allotment

JoSAA conducts a preliminary mock allotment before Round 1 to give candidates an idea of where they stand. Use this to refine your list — mock allotment outcomes do not bind you.

04

Allocation Rounds

JoSAA runs multiple rounds of seat allocation. After each round, provisional allotments are published. You must respond within the deadline by choosing Freeze, Float, or Slide and paying the Seat Acceptance Fee.

Failure to respond means exit from the process.

05

Online Reporting & Document Verification

Upload required documents through the JoSAA portal. A verifying officer checks your documents. If there is a discrepancy, a Query is raised — you must respond within 24 to 48 hours or your seat is cancelled.

06

Final Admission

Physically report to the allotted institute for document verification and admission formalities. Carry original documents even if you have uploaded digital copies.

Round Decisions

Freeze, Float, and Slide — Explained

After each JoSAA round, you must choose one of three response options. This is one of the most misunderstood parts of JoSAA counseling.

Freeze

Lock in. You're done.

You are satisfied with your current allotment. You lock it in and exit the upgrading process. No further rounds will consider you for a better option.

Float

Hold your seat, try for better.

You accept your current seat to secure your position, but remain in the process. If something better is allotted, your current seat is replaced. If not, you keep your current seat.

Slide

Same college, better branch.

You accept your current institute but try for a better branch within the same college. You do not move to a different college — only a better programme at the same one.

What happens to your seat when you Float?

Floating does not mean you lose your current seat. Your current allotment is held. If the system finds a better option higher in your list, the new seat replaces the old one. If nothing better is available, you keep your current seat exactly as it was.

Do I pay the SAF when I Float or Slide?

Yes — you must pay the Seat Acceptance Fee when you choose Float or Slide, not only when you Freeze. If you do not pay, you exit the process permanently. This is the most common fee-related mistake in JoSAA.

Can I Float in the final round?

No. There is no subsequent round to float into. In the final round, you must either Freeze or exit. The Edufant Round Advisor will flag this before the deadline.

Edufant Round Advisor

After each round result, enter your current allotment and get a clear Freeze, Float, or Slide recommendation with one reason — based on your rank gap and historical upgrade data.

Allocation Logic

How JoSAA Allocates Seats

JoSAA uses a Merit-cum-Preference matching system. Understanding how it works directly affects how you should order your preference list.

01

Step 01

Candidates ranked by merit

All candidates are ordered by rank within each category and quota pool. For NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, JEE Main rank is used. For IITs, JEE Advanced rank is used.

02

Step 02

Highest preference with vacant seat is matched

For each candidate (in rank order), JoSAA checks their preference list from top to bottom. The first choice with a vacant seat in their category pool is the provisional allotment.

03

Step 03

Seat matrix is the authoritative source

The seat matrix — published by JoSAA before counseling — specifies exactly how many seats are available at each institute, programme, category, and quota combination.

Home State (HS) Quota

At NITs and some GFTIs, 50% of seats in each programme are reserved for Home State candidates — students whose State of Eligibility matches the state where the institute is located. HS closing ranks can be 30–50% tighter, but the HS candidate pool is also dramatically smaller.

Other State (OS) Quota

The remaining 50% of seats at NITs and GFTIs are allocated to candidates from all other states. If you are from the same state as the NIT, your HS rank should always be reflected in your preference list for far better chances.

Choice Filling Strategy

How to Fill Your JoSAA Preference List

The order of your choices is the most important decision in JoSAA counseling. A desired option placed too low means you may get allocated something below it before the system ever reaches it.

List everything

There is no penalty for filling many choices. Students who fill only 10–15 options regularly go unallotted in Round 1 and spend the rest of counseling in a disadvantaged position.

Order matters strictly

JoSAA respects your preference order. Place your most desired option at the top, regardless of how competitive it is. Worst case: you don't get it and fall to the next choice.

Dream options go above safe options

If you want NIT Trichy CSE, place it above NIT Surathkal ECE. If you place it below, you may get allotted NIT Surathkal ECE in Round 1 and never reach NIT Trichy CSE even if your rank was competitive enough.

Lock before the deadline

The system auto-locks choices at the deadline but manual locking is safer. A last-minute technical issue can leave your list unlocked and vulnerable.

Edufant Preference List Builder

Automatically compiles your ordered list from your rank and College Fit Test results. Dream options pinned top. Safe options anchor the bottom. Export to PDF and copy to josaa.nic.in.

Documents

JoSAA Document Requirements

Document errors are the leading non-rank cause of seat loss in JoSAA. Having the wrong format for a certificate costs you the seat your rank earned.

Core Documents Required

  • JEE Main Admit Card and Score Card
  • Class 10 and Class 12 Marksheets (Date of Birth proof)
  • Category Certificate — OBC-NCL (central format), SC, ST, EWS (current financial year)
  • Medical Certificate (Annexure 1)
  • PwD Certificate (Annexure 4) — if applicable
  • Declaration by Candidate (Annexure 8)
  • Gap Certificate or Affidavit — if gap year between Class 12 and current year

Critical Certificate Rules

OBC-NCL

Must be in central government format. State OBC certificate is not accepted. Family income must be below ₹8 lakh per year. An OBC state certificate has cost students their seats.

EWS

Must be issued in the current financial year. A certificate from the previous financial year is invalid even if it was valid when issued.

SC and ST

Certificate must specify the caste or tribe as listed in the central government schedule. State-specific formats may not be accepted at all institutes.

Digilocker

Digital mark sheets from Digilocker are accepted during online reporting. Carry originals for physical reporting at the institute.

Seat Acceptance Fee

Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF)

Mandatory payment required to confirm participation in each round. If you do not pay, you exit permanently — regardless of Freeze, Float, or Slide.

Institute TypeGEN / EWS / OBCSC / ST / PwD
IITs₹35,000₹12,000
NITs / IIITs / GFTIs₹15,000₹6,000

Amounts based on recent JoSAA sessions. Always verify on the official JoSAA portal before payment.

After JoSAA Ends

CSAB Special Rounds

After all JoSAA rounds are complete, if seats remain vacant at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs, CSAB conducts Special Rounds. IIT seats are not part of CSAB.

Who Can Participate

  • Did not get any seat in JoSAA
  • Withdrew or cancelled JoSAA seat
  • Want to try for a better seat than current JoSAA allotment

Key Differences

  • Fewer candidates, different seat availability
  • Significantly different closing ranks vs JoSAA
  • Separate CSAB Enrollment Fee required — not refunded if no seat

Important

  • Registration window is short
  • Most students don't know CSAB exists until after JoSAA ends
  • Edufant sends WhatsApp alerts about CSAB dates to premium users

Common Errors & Important Tips

Errors to Avoid

  • Missing the fee payment deadline — seat cancelled permanently, no extension
  • Leaving choices unlocked — system auto-locks but last-minute glitches happen
  • Using OBC state certificate instead of OBC central certificate
  • Submitting an expired EWS certificate from a previous financial year
  • Not responding to a Document Query within 24 to 48 hours
  • Floating in the final round — Float is not available in the last round
  • Building a preference list with fewer than 40 choices at most rank bands

Important Tips

  • Keep scanned originals of all documents ready before counseling begins
  • Use the official JoSAA certificate formats — formats from previous years may differ
  • Check the official Seat Matrix for exact slot counts, not third-party sources
  • Read the JoSAA Business Rules document at least once — it governs every rule
  • Monitor your JoSAA portal actively during document verification — Queries can appear at any time

JoSAA Terms Explained

CRL

Your overall rank in JEE Main or JEE Advanced, regardless of category. Used for OPEN category seat allocation. Not the rank used for reserved category seats.

Category Rank

Your rank among candidates in your specific category — OBC-NCL, SC, ST, or GEN-EWS. JoSAA allocates reserved category seats on this rank, not CRL.

Mock Allotment

A preliminary allotment conducted by JoSAA before Round 1. Not binding. Used to help candidates understand their likely position and refine their choice list.

Opening / Closing Rank

Opening Rank is the best rank that got admission in a round. Closing Rank is the worst rank that secured a seat. Most tools show final-round Closing Ranks — the lowest, most optimistic number.

SAF

Seat Acceptance Fee. Mandatory payment to confirm participation in each round. Must be paid regardless of whether you Freeze, Float, or Slide. Missing this means permanent exit.

HS / OS Quota

Home State (HS) seats reserved for candidates whose State of Eligibility matches the institute's state. Other State (OS) seats open to candidates from all other states.

CSAB

Central Seat Allocation Board. Conducts Special Rounds for vacant seats at NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs after JoSAA ends. IIT seats are not included in CSAB.
